One out of every six adults will have depression at some time in their life. In fact, depression affects about 16 million U.S. adults every year.
Depression is more than just feeling sad or having a bad day. A person experiencing depression may have several symptoms for weeks or longer that interfere with their ability to manage day-to-day activities.
A person with depression may feel:
- Anxious or sad often
- Irritable, easily upset or restless
- Tired, even after sleeping well
- Guilty, worthless or helpless
If a patient is showing signs of depression, their doctor can give them a depression screening. Depression may be treated with counseling, medicine or both. Although most people with depression get better with treatment, few (only about 35%) seek help.
