If you’re 65 years old, or over 65 and you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years, you’re eligible for Medicare and can get Medicare Part A for free. While most people will not pay a premium for Part A, there is a monthly cost for Part B. Generally, your Part B premium will be automatically deducted from your Social Security, Railroad Retirement or Civil Service Retirement benefit check. If you don't receive any of those benefit checks, Medicare sends a monthly bill.
If you're under 65 and have been receiving disability benefits from Social Security for two years, you'll be automatically enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B.
